They have been found to be particularly useful for amplifying "difficult" instruments like Maccaferri style jazz guitars, Dobros and other Resonator guitars.
Other instruments include the Hurdy-Gurdy, Ukeleles, Mandolins, Dulcimers, Bouzoukis - and a host of exotic and less familiar instruments.
These are our original concept pickups, and although they have been refined over the years, we are not alone in believing they have yet to be improved upon by anybody.
In fact, practically anything with strings..
It can be used with a wide variety of instruments besides guitar.
The best attachment place is found by experimentation, but is usually on the bridge or close to it.
It is possible to combine two AJ21s and mix the sound from different positions,
both in phase (where the sound is a simple blend) and out,
where the sounds subtract from each other to cause tonal variation dependent on the degree of physical separation.
The pickups are out of phase when one is attached by its opposite face relative to the other. This mode also has the potential for feedback-cancelling.
INTERNAL INSTALLATION: Find the
place (usually directly under the bridge) which produces the best sound
using the double-sided tape provided.
Quick-set epoxy may be used for permanence, but avoid polyurethane and contact glues, as these can affect tone.
Inside, it is recommended to attach the AJ21 by its upper (bevelled) face. If changing the socket, don't forget the limiting resistor (120K)
which is connected across the terminals - i.e. in parallel with the output.

The AJ51
(Budget Bug) is similar to the AJ21, but suitable for high impedance
inputs only. There is no resistor in the socket.
